A new container landmark marked the entrance to Bilbao Maritime Museum in June 2015. Six shipping containers, repurposed from their commercial role, formed a structure more than 16 metres high.
From a wooden sign to a container landmark
In 2007, the museum had installed a promotional structure made from wooden cubes resembling shipping containers. Over time it became a recognisable feature of the museum and its outdoor spaces. The replacement used six real shipping containers, one more than the earlier wooden structure.

The original report described the difficulty of positioning the containers at this height. Installation was completed with the collaboration of Aurtenetxea Containers S.A. and support from the museum’s principal sponsors, Seguros Bilbao and Fundación Jesús Serra of Grupo Catalana Occidente.
The report also credited Zabala Arquitectos with the technical approval and certification of the six-container installation.
