Two visitors pose in front of the Arteko Container artwork with numbers and symbols

Arteko Container brought live painting by Sixe Paredes to a shipping container supplied by Aurtenetxea Containers in Bilbao.

Contemporary art in public space

The initiative proposed one creative intervention on a freight container each year. People of different ages could watch the work develop and meet the artist directly, bringing contemporary visual art into an everyday urban setting.

Conceived as a public art project, Arteko Container treated the city as a place for artistic activity beyond exhibition rooms. It aimed to encourage participation and bring international artists’ work closer to residents.

Sixe Paredes

Sergio Hidalgo Paredes, born in Barcelona in 1975 and also known as SIXEART, began working in graffiti in the late 1980s. His practice subsequently developed across urban art, exhibitions and gallery settings.

The original exhibition note highlighted his international work and his participation among the six artists who painted the façade of Tate Modern in London for the 2008 Street Art exhibition.
